Oral Surgeon

Oral surgeons work with your dentist and can make sure complex problems, such as wisdom teeth, are handled correctly. An oral surgeon is a dentist who has completed up to six additional years of education beyond their dental degree. Surgeons have advanced training in a variety different areas such as anesthesia and sedation techniques to provide patients with better comfort and care.

Oral surgery is often required during reconstructive procedures or troublesome extractions such as wisdom teeth, broken teeth, infections, or injuries to your jaw or face. Removing wisdom teeth is the most common reason an oral surgeon would be necessary. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually come in during the late teens or early twenties. Wisdom teeth can push your other teeth out of alignment, or they may not come in all the way. They may be out of their normal position or impacted if other teeth or bone are blocking them.
